Fascia is a sheet or band of connective tissue located beneath the skin that attaches, stabilizes, encloses, and separates muscles. It also surrounds internal organs, keeping them distinct from one another. Like ligaments and tendons, fascia is composed of fibrous connective tissue made up of closely packed bundles of collagen fibres arranged in a wavy pattern, parallel to the direction of pull. This structure allows fascia to be flexible while resisting significant unidirectional tension forces.
Fascia becomes clinically important when it either loses stiffness or becomes too stiff, or when it exhibits decreased shearing ability. Conditions such as inflammatory fasciitis or trauma can lead to fibrosis and adhesions, causing the fascial tissue to fail in differentiating adjacent structures, ultimately resulting in a loss of muscle performance.
Self-myofascial release (SMR) is a stretching technique that utilizes the principle of autogenic inhibition to improve soft tissue extensibility. This process relaxes the muscle and fascia, helping to restore normal hyaluronic acid viscosity. Additionally, this technique corrects the positional relationship between adjacent tissues, aiding in the restoration of normal proprioceptive function in the injured area.
